There are plenty of things to consider when looking at adding a fireplace to your home, whether it's for inside the home or for the backyard. Safety is a concern, and making sure to observe all the local codes and getting a permit if necessary will help to prevent accidents. These things should be taken into account when looking at different outdoor fireplace designs, whether you are planning on creating them yourself or working with a professional. With that in mind, you need to decide on the material that the fireplace will be constructed from.
Traditionally, stone and brick are the popular choices for the construction of a fireplace. However, people are getting creative and starting to use other materials like cast iron or even aluminum. Obviously, the material will play a big role in the overall aesthetics of the unit, so decide accordingly. Once that has been decided, the location should be the next part included in the outdoor fireplace designs. Whether it's meant to be the focal point of the backyard or a complementary aspect, where the unit is built will make a difference.
There are several things to consider in regards to the ventilation of the fireplace as well. It might be hard to believe, but different outdoor fireplace designs are based around these things. For example, a wood burning unit must have a chimney that is at least two feet above any structure that is nearby for safety reasons. Another thing is the fact that you should avoid building these types of fireplaces upwind from the home. Otherwise, unwanted smoke and soot will move toward the house. If you want to avoid these things, you should go with a gas model. Gas types still need ventilation, but they don't affect the look of the structure as much.
So while it can be fun to design your own outdoor fireplace, it does take careful planning. In addition to making sure to follow the necessary rules and regulations, you should try to work in how many people you would like to be able to gather around the fireplace into the plans. You'll quickly realize that the whole look of the backyard almost forms itself when you consider all these things.
